The College of Cardinals meets in the Vatican for a crucial conclave: an election destined not only to choose a new pontiff, but to shape the future of the Church. In the majestic Sistine Chapel, under the gaze of Michelangelo's masterpieces, cardinals from every corner of the world meet in a ritual shrouded in centuries of tradition and mystery.
Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes), dean of the College, is charged with overseeing this sacred procedure, but he soon discovers that it will not just be a matter of faith and prayer. Among the main candidates stand out Cardinal Bellini (Stanley Tucci), an influential figure in the Vatican; Cardinal Trembley (John Lithgow) of Montreal; Cardinal Tedesco (Sergio Castellitto) of Venice and Cardinal Adeyemi (Lucian Msamati) from Nigeria, who could make history as the first African Pope.
Behind their purple robes, however, lie personal ambitions and compromising secrets, capable of upsetting the delicate balance of the Church.
