Paul Hunham played by Paul Giamatti is given the task of staying at Barton boarding school over Christmas break to watch over the students who could not go home for the holidays. Before Christmas Eve, four of the holdover kids do get taken in by one family. The Holdovers is set in 1970 so there are no cell phones or internet to occupy the characters. They have to pass the time with each other.
